Joining The Dots – the secret to better partner campaigns

Partner marketing often gets stuck in a cycle of one-off campaigns and a rush to get a campaign live and content out of the door. In my recent conversation with Rick Currier on the PartnerVista podcast we talked about what it really takes to make partner marketing effective and scalable.

Here are a few key takeaways from our chat:

From Hero Assets to Content Ecosystems

A common mistake we see is Partner Marketers investing into one asset and not repurposing or expanding it – or worse supplying vendor content to just add a partner logo and use it as a co-branded asset. I always encourage clients to start with a “hero” asset (like a whitepaper or video) but then build a full content ecosystem around it. Think:

  • Short-form articles
  • Infographics
  • LinkedIn carousels
  • Animated video explainers
  • Email snippets
  • SDR follow-up assets

Research shows that format preference is dependent on age, seniority and stage of the buying cycle. So the content ecosystem approach not only gives your audience multiple access points to your content and messaging, it extends the shelf life of your campaign and supports multiple stages of the buyer journey.

It will also support your partners’ sales teams with additional content for lead nurture!

What Sales Actually Wants

Talking of sales…it’s well known that often there is a disconnect between sales and marketing, even more so in the complex world of Partner Marketing.

Successful Partner Marketers have figured out how to empower partner sales teams in educating them on the marketing activities in the field and what is expected from them for the lead follow up. They go beyond the actual campaign and deliver follow up templates, content and more.

From experience, what sales really wants is simple:

  • Clear messaging they can use (email templates/ partner battlecards)
  • Nurture content – and ideally a scripted content flow for nurture and engagement
  • Campaigns that feel connected to real customer challenges

We talked about making this connection more deliberate and that we see great use of AI in generating personalised sales follow up templates tailored to the lead’s journey and content engagement as well as third party nurture to lighten the load of partner sales teams.

Why Integrated Campaigns Win Every Time

In the conversation I also touched on the importance of integrated campaigns. Too often we see partner marketing efforts that are siloed due to quarterly partner funds and pressures to launch quickly to not lose budget.

However, we see much stronger results when campaigns are planned ahead and integrated, even if the tactics stretch across multiple quarters.

For example:

  • webinar in Q1
  • Followed by a demand gen campaign in Q2 using the on-demand recording and a summary whitepaper
  • Then a face-to-face event in Q3, inviting leads and registrants from earlier activities

This type of connected approach keeps your audience engaged, moves them through the buyer journey step by step, and reinforces your message at every stage.

It’s Not Just About Recruitment — It’s About Activation

Another point we explored was how programs often focus on signing new partners but don’t invest in enabling or activating them.

That’s where we see campaigns stall, when partners are left with a portal login and no clear next step. Real enablement means content that’s easy to execute and accompanying guidance that’s easy to implement. Campaigns that feel turnkey.

Final Thought: Simpler, Smarter Partner Marketing

What stood out in this conversation is that partner marketing doesn’t need to be overly complex but it does need to be joined up. When you build smart, integrated campaigns, create content that can scale and focus on enabling your partners (not just signing them), you set the foundation for great success. Add to that conversations, collaboration and creativity (the human touch!) and you’ve got a formula that drives engagement and pipeline, not just activity.
